Lifelong development cooperation – Matti Hakamäki Oy found a direction for its business

Matti Hakamäki Oy has been an expert in civil engineering and waterworks since 2016, serving customers in the Salo, Kemiönsaari and Raseborg areas. The company's services include, among others: earthworks, waterworks construction, construction of piers and small buildings and road maintenance.

As the company grew, it was necessary to clarify the direction of the business and develop structures to respond to the changing operating environment. "At the beginning, it felt a bit lost. There was no background knowledge of business operations, but we knew how to do practical work," says CEO Matti Hakamäki. "The consultation with Kristian really made things easier – an outside perspective opened our eyes to things we hadn't thought about before."

A comprehensive self-assessment brought the necessary insights

The collaboration with Kristian Karimon of Arvoverkok began with a business self-assessment. With its help, Matti Hakamäki Oy reviewed its company structure and business model, which led to concrete changes. "We noticed that the business was too dispersed. The right solution was to divide the functions into separate companies," Hakamäki says.

One key insight was the use of labor and the company's growth strategy. "Hiring is challenging in the industry, so we decided to minimize the number of permanent personnel and use more subcontractors and sole proprietors. This made the operation more agile and less risky".

Strategic change is visible in the company's everyday life

As a result of business development, the company's structure was clarified and new operating models were introduced. "We didn't just get an analysis, but concrete tools that we have been able to utilize in our daily operations," Hakamäki describes.

These included, among others, a strategy map, a competence mapping, a SWOT analysis, a risk preparedness plan and SuperExcel, which brings together the company's development work. In particular, the electronicization of income statements and profitability analyses made everyday life significantly easier.

"Now we have a clearer direction and we know where to invest. This has helped us grow in a controlled manner, without having to jump into the unknown," Hakamäki says.

Entrepreneurship is continuous learning

The development work done with Kristian was not a single project, but part of an ongoing process. "You can never be ready when you're trying, but now there are tools that can be used to make development rationally", Hakamäki sums up.

When asked how he would describe the collaboration with Arvoverkok, his answer is concise: "Lifelong development cooperation".
